Writing Tip: Engage with Others in your Position
When we post something and come back a few hours later to discover not a single view or like, it can be very discouraging.
A multitude of questions can attack us at once.
What did I do wrong?
Why don’t people like my post?
How can I get more people to view my writing?
Should I have posted something else?
Am I a bad writer?
The answer to the final question is no. I do not believe in “bad” writers, I believe in writers who are still developing their technique. The other four questions are not as easy to answer. You may be creating top quality material, but if nobody is viewing it then you can still feel dejected.
One thing that can help us, not only in terms of getting more page views or likes but also to become more confident writers, is to engage with other people who are in the same position. By exploring, reading and commenting we can gain ideas, an insight into popular topics or blogs, and helpful, positive advice on where we might be able to improve. Reading the work of published authors will always be good for writers, but reading what our peers have created can teach us a great deal about our own writing, too.
Go to a blog you particularly enjoy. Read through their posts and pick out two: one you really like and one that you don’t. Think about the things that work well in the first post and those that don’t work in the second. The next time you write, keep these things in mind and see whether they apply to your own writing. It could give you some helpful hints on what makes a great piece.
