Inspiration Call: * Timed Writing *

Choose a set time to write, 5 −7 minutes serves well. Set a timer, watch the clock. Stop writing when the time is up, even in the middle of a sentence. In timed writing, you write for a short, prescribed period of time. The purpose of timed writing is to prime the creative pump: shortening writing time makes sure you have more to say than time to say it. The frustration of stopping creates the impetus to write more. You become more interested in the ideas and thoughts you want to put down and less self-conscious about the times it’s taking to write. This exercise also helps develop confidence and establishes creative tension.

Old Man Stands in Field at the End of the World

    an old man
    stands in a field
at the end of the world

    looking out
    at a meadow
    devoid of all humanity
    for humanity had died

    leaving him
    all alone
    with his thoughts

    Inspiration Call: Traveling
Write a poem based on a time you’ve traveled by bus – whether a school bus, around town, or a long distance trip to visit a certain destination.
the Bus – Travels Through America’s Underbelly

    I am a bus rider
    That makes me unusual
    For a white male
From an upper middle class family

Our people are not bus riders
    Though some are subway riders

    Bus riders are other people
    The poor, minorities, immigrants
    People who don’t drive
    Because they are blind
    Or have a DUI

    And in my case
    I don’t drive
    Because I have bad vision
    And bad coordination
    Just never got the hang
    Of the whole driving thing

    Fortunately for me
    My wife does the driving
But I still take the bus
    From time to time

I rode the AC buses in Berkeley
    As a child
    Line 67, line 51, line 43 F bus
Rode them long before BART came along
    And afterwards as well

As an adult seldom rode the bus
    But when I did so
    I was always impressed
    By the sheer diversity
    Of the bus riding property

    Hundreds of languages
    All sorts of sexual orientation
    Some were white
    Most were not

    Most of my fellow passengers
    Were nice enough
    Some were friendly
    And some were lost
    In their own thoughts

    And a few
    Were scary looking dudes
    With the look
Of someone who had done time
And were capable of more violence

    I also rode the bus
In Seattle as a graduate student
A lot of fellow UW students
    And the usual immigrants
    Minorities etc

    And some white people
    Commuting

    And in DC
    Over the years
I rode a lot of buses

Mostly to and from the metro
    But I got to know
And love the DC buses as well

I also took the greyhound bus
    Across the country
    Several times over the years
    All over the U.S.

    From Bay Area to Stockton
From Bay Area to Clear Lake
    From Bay area to NYC
    NYC to DC
    All over the USA

    Taking the Greyhound
    Was always an an adventure
Met a lot of interesting people
As people on long distant bus rides
Tend to open up and talk
    To pass the time away

    Overseas I took the bus
    All over
    In India, in Barbados
    In Spain and in Korea

    The Korean buses
    For many years
    Were difficult for foreign visitors
As the signs were all in Korean

    Most have signs
Now in English, Chinese and Korean
And are much more foreigner friendly

    Riding the bus
    In America
    Allows one access
To the underbelly of American society
    The poor, the marginalized
    The immigrant communities

That many middle class white people
    Just never see

    And for that reason
    I am glad
That I am a bus rider

Inspiration Call: Word Prompt Wednesday: Watch
    Time Waits for No One

    they say that time
    waits for no one

    especially the grim reaper
who has a schedule to keep

that when it is your time
    to meet your fate
    it is your date

    although the hour be late
    no one can escape
    the marinations of fate

Thursday February 20, 2020 Writing Prompt
    Inspiration Call: Music Inspiration
Tune in to a radio station you don’t normally listen to, and write a poem inspired by the the first song or message you hear.
    More Trouble Every Day

    The Old Zappa song plays
    on in my head
every time I turn on the news

and see more trouble every day
    no one can delay
    the trouble coming every day

    Frank Zappa died too soon
before the horrors of the Trump era
    that he would have foreseen
    if he had lived on

    he was truly a prophet
    crying in the wildness
    while making money
    as an over night sensation

    as he saw the slime
oozing out of the TV sets
we will do what we are told
for the rights to us have been sold

    And Jesus too
    has been sold
    to the highest bidder

    nothing but a business deal
    in America
the land of the constant deal

and so I turn off the TV
    and realize that
    the torture never ends
    the torture never ends

    Inspiration Call: Flower Symbolism
Write a poem or story that uses flowers as a symbol.
    the flower of love

    my love is like
    the most fragrant flower
    in the universe

    so beautiful so pure
    so filled with cosmic love
    a love that transcends
    this corrupted world

    and every time
    I look at her
    I see the flower
    in her eyes
    and her soul

    and my soul is bewitched
    by her other world beauty
turning me into her love slave

    until death does us part
on the other end of time
