Letter to Trees of These Here Woods by Philip Elliott

Dear Trees of These Here Woods,

Thank you for watching over me every night while I go to sleep. And thank you for being my friend. You’re the only friend I got left. I was somebody once. I had more friends than I knew what to do with. I had everything. Except money. I never had any of that. Point is, when you got something good, you gotta hold onto it. Nothing lasts forever and I ain’t naive enough to think it does, but at least if you try your best to hold onto what you got, you won’t have no regrets. Don’t go throwing away what makes you happy is what I’m saying. So Trees, if you got your leaves in the summer then be glad of em. Cause they ain’t goin be there come winter. But don’t give em up so easy. Make the winter tear them from your bones. Then when you’re naked and shivering under an endless black sheet of a sky, you’ll have the comfort of knowing you put up a fight. You gotta fight for your leaves, Trees, you gotta fight. Cause see those stars overhead right now? They ain’t even there really. Hard to believe, I know, but they ain’t. But your leaves? Your leaves are there. You can feel them kissing you every time the breeze passes by. Remember those kisses, Trees. They’re all you got.

Your friend,

JJ

This brilliant debut consists of a prose collection of fictional letters from a deceased 26-year-old Southern American named Jeremiah John Watts (JJ). The people JJ mentions in these letters have a parallel to the alienated and confused dreamers, addicts and lost souls found in the work of the likes of Denis Johnson and William Burroughs, but JJ’s larger-than-life sentimentality as his past leaks out of his heart and onto the page puts this collection in some new sphere of perception equally brilliant but entirely its own. Gradually, the letters tell a fractured tale of a life of mistakes, heartbreak, sickness, and regret, but also love, faith, hope and perseverance.
