Hard luck had pressed on him. Not the way a man gets beat by a high upper cut. It was a series of low blows that eroded him, eroded his pride; his hope.
His Daddy used to tell him he was too soft, feeling too much was no good. His Mamma told Daddy to “hush, the child was just fine the way God made him.”
He didn’t feel fine now that he was a grown man. He just felt old, worn out from working, giving and getting nothing.
His mind told him, maybe Daddy had it right. His heart told him, Mamma was never wrong.
