Writing Tip: Poetry Form – Haiku

Poetry Form: Haiku

A Haiku is a three line Japanese poem that has a syllable count for each line. The syllable count for line one is five syllables, line two seven syllables, and line three has five syllables. The total syllable count for a Haiku is seventeen syllables in all. Some contemporary writers are now writing seventeen syllable run on sentences, which should not be confused with a Haiku. Haikus are technically nature based poems, and can be linked, in which case they would be linked verse Haikus.

The pattern for Haiku is the following:

Line 1: 5 syllables

Line 2: 7 syllables

Line 3: 5 syllables

Example:

Freedom Haiku

Cool breeze on my skin

Under the bright moonlight glow

Freedom in nature’s shadow

Her bed time stories were of Nikki Giovanni, Sonia Sanchez, Marcus Garvey, Phylis Wheatley, Langston Hughes, Paul Lawrence Dunbar, Chavez, Gil Scott Heron, Khalil Gibran, The Last Poets, and many others.
