Love You Down the Years – Author Daryl P. Hall

Today I want to take you,

Lead you gently by the hand.

Head out to the beach and write

Our initials in the sand.

The weather is so cold outside,

Yet we always will stay warm.

I’ll wrap my love around you

To shield you from the storm.

Proposals fly ‘cross sky-ways

Like the fleeting bird of youth.

Sweet gestures of my love for you,

As if you ever needed proof.

But our love’s not bells and whistles,

Our love’s not hearts and flowers.

Through the scorching sunshine of our days,

Our love’s a cooling shower.

Yes, we’ll grow old together

As life’s sea returns to shore.

Still delighting in each other,

Knowing we could give no more.

We’ll cherish one another

More and more each day.

If anyone should question me,

Then hand on heart I’ll say:

I want to love you down the years,

I want to share your hopes and fears.

I want to be the one you laugh with,

I want to be your healing tears.
