Narcissists make love
to themselves in mirrors
practiced faces of empathy;
practiced tears
rehearsals held daily
urging you to talk
picking you apart
pulling wings off
butterflies
with well-meaning smiles
generosity with a price
nothing is free
they need people
for adulation
what is a performance
without an audience?
they begin a sentence
by clearing their throat
to prepare you to hear
their well contrived
proclamations
to command attention
to command respect
they are empty vessels
when there is no one
left to adore them
they step over the
people they ravaged
for their own purposes;
as one would avoid stepping on the cracks
….in a sidewalk
