Shine On Crazy Diamond by Lyne Beringer

Buried in a chocolate box
In paper colored gold
There lives a well known diamond
Black and eons old
It is said it once belonged
To a pretty girl in need
And legend says it even graced the hand
Of the cunning Arctic Queen
She’d put on her darkest rubies
All her favorite jewels
When the blood moon came to visit
She’d pick a man to rule
Under stars that twinkled bright
Up in the milky way
She’d lure her next unsuspecting catch
To ravage for a day
Then on one such occasion
The queen was pleased to find
A man from a distant valley
Where there were secret diamond mines
Dressed in all her finest
Wearing irresistible perfume
A queen who ruled a kingdom
Asked the man up to her room
There was something very interesting
About this man indeed
An unexpected flutter
Stirred in the heart of the Arctic Queen
He winked at her and slightly bowed
His speech was carefully planned
He said I have a gift for you
To place upon your hand
Ah but…..

There is a catch – the box is locked
I alone possess the key
I will gladly trade it
If you will only set me free
All at once the queen stood up
Her heart now chilled to ice
I’ll take that key and have the box
I will not ask you twice
She had tired of his foolish game
And had the man removed
Sent him to the catacombs
Where he would meet his final doom
Alone at last she grasped the key
Opened up the box
Out came a shimmering diamond
On the eve of the equinox
She placed the diamond on her hand
Everything turned dark and hazy
The Arctic Queen who ruled the land
Now certifiably crazy
That’s the story, centuries old
And why the ring’s not seen
That beautiful rare black diamond
Stole the mind of the Arctic Queen

I never thought the word “writer” would be used to describe me and the thoughts that tumble out of my head onto paper. It’s a new me, giving away words all neatly packaged up in rhyme.

I have lived in the interior of Alaska off and on for nearly twenty years. Alaska gets in your blood. It lures you in then takes your soul hostage, becoming part of who you are, who you become. Every summer, the days are warm, long, and inviting. Tourists descend in droves, racing toward the next adventure, and a rich, colorful history provides plenty of businesses with trinkets to sell the Alaskan nostalgia.  Anything seems possible when you are standing outside at midnight and the stars are nowhere to be found. That is until winter rolls back around.
