Pig by Sue Lobo

Driving fat piglets to the abattoir in his truck was his job,

Ignoring their squealing & whining as they sadly sobbed,

Piling them in at the farm & swiftly dropping them all off,

And then off for bacon rolls & tea, his daily breakfast scoff.

Deaf, blind & blaséd to the poor little piglets pink whinges,

As he slammed shut the truck´s death-knolled-door-hinges,

Then one day, unloading his piglets out with an urging shout,

All gone, but one little piggy with broken leg & quivering snout.

“What the hell, matters not, you´ll soon be ham bacon, & pork”,

But the pain in the little animal´s eyes soon stilled his selfish talk,

With care he lifted the hurt little piglet, scared, battered & torn,

And placed him inside his jacket where it was fleecy, snug & warm.

Our delivery man, with piglet in tow, made a visit to the local vet,

So treated, fixed & in a cast, the little piglet´s broken leg was set,

With mind made up, the delivery man went into work the next day,

Gave his immediate notice & asked his boss for every cent of his pay.

Piglet lived as a pet, happy & long, with the man´s cat, rabbit & dogs,

The delivery man got a job on the farm, caring for pigs, sows & hogs,

And never again could he eat meat, not pork, beef, poultry & lamb,

Thinking that his poor little piglet could have been his dinner´s ham.

The delivery man became a vegan & he saw animals totally anew,

As creatures who love & need loving & not ending up in the stew,

He thanked God daily, for giving him his life´s most valuable prize,

For guiding him to look into that sad, little piglet´s soft trusting eyes.
