Ashes by Anusha VR

The dragon soared across the night sky

Looking down upon the passers by.

She thirsted for the blood of a knight

For the first times in weeks he had slipped out of her sight.

Before she had been a black-scaled monster,

She had been a princess, a sister, a daughter.

But that was eons ago, when love had tricked her heart

His facade had made her believe they would never be apart.

One night in the woods, a curse had been cast

The world believed she was dead, she became a thing of the past.

He played the role of the grieving widower to perfection

The royal family had fallen prey to his deception.

Into the thick woods, slipped the knight.

She followed the trail flooded with moonlight.

Towards the witch’s hut he scurried

to embraced the wretched woman he had married.

The king had given away his treasures

Which they could now spend at leisure.

Their love would no longer be a secret

Once they left the kingdom without a fret.

The shadows came alive all of a sudden,

The black dragon emerged from where she was hidden.

Golden flames unfurled from the belly of the beast.

Everything turned to ash as the sun heralded a new day from the east.

Who are you? Are you a brave knight? A warrior brandishing your sword, ready for battle. Are you a dreamer? Away with the fairies, losing count of fireflies whilst searching for Neverland. A goth? Who feels right at home with the monsters hiding under the bed, who loves to dance a dervish with the devil on the stroke of midnight. Or perhaps you are a dragon-slayer? Or a soul snatcher? Basking in the heat of an eternal flame. Or maybe you’re a witch? Hiding deep in the woods, practicing dark arts beneath the light of a full moon.
