The Letter by Hugh Dysart

Someone sent me,

naked words,

in a dead-end letter

Six pages of blank white,

the scent of secrets kept,

yearning to be told

Tales of Cinderella damsels,

captive in abandoned towers

Exiled queens wandering,

the halls of haunted castles

Words appearing, vanishing,

falling from a dead-end letter,

someone sent me

Behind closed eyes, words,

voices, pretty faces drift,

over ancient battlefields

Visions of knights lost in war,

damsels crying into forever

Evil queens stalk the halls,

of dark enchanted castles

Dust of an advancing army

Flags of tattered red crosses,

signal the death of hope

Someone sent me,

naked words,

in a dead-end letter

Return to Sender
