He took me by surprise
I didn’t even realize
that I was still alive.
I thought I’d forgotten
how to get through
and survive
the endless nights.
Out of sight,
out of mind?
Yeah right.
Remember when we would
stay awake till sunrise,
how we put the world to rights?
You gave me some of the
best times of my life
but they weren’t mine to keep,
you ripped them from me slowly
like a recurring nightmare,
stealing me away from sleep.
You casually crept up to me
and I wasn’t ready yet
but that didn’t stop you
and I couldn’t stop you,
I could only ever prepare
myself for the upset,
the gut-wrenching regret.
I try so very hard to forget
that you took me by surprise,
that I’m even still alive.
