Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. Some of us dread the day as we have no one to share it with. It is usually a popular time for break-ups to occur, hence leaving many broken hearts. The stress of everyday life can also cause us much pain. Sometimes we often push ourselves too hard and end up having to fight physical dilemmas. We feel all kinds of pain in our heart, body, mind and soul. It can be to the point where it drives us mad. So how can we cope? We can put all kinds of pain on paper. People all over the world feel it too, so let them know they are not alone.
Tis the season for bleeding hearts; we cannot avoid seeing all the advertisements about finding the right gift for the love of your life. It is not a fun time for those who are single or going through a failed relationship. So with all those jingles you hear about love, write one for the others like you who have not found it yet. Write for a divorced man or woman who needs some encouragement. It is not love that is cruel, but the people who are giving it a bad name.
For some writers, emotional pain is best dealt with by writing. It can be great therapy putting all those negative emotions into a poem or an entry in a personal journal. For those who have dealt with abuse, depression, anxiety…they know pain leaves a knot within. By writing, one can loosen those taut binds. Write about your experience as a victim and how you survived. There are people who need to know how to get past the pain because they don’t know how. Your words could possibly be their saving grace.
Do you suffer from migraines? Does arthritis keep you from doing simple tasks? Did a car accident leave you in pain? Or perhaps you became impaired while serving our country. Use that physical pain as a tool in your writing. People are living with chronic pain every day and it can be frustrating. Write about the pain not just literally, but metaphorically as well. Pain can feel like a thousand needles on the skin or a jackhammer against the bones. Give your audience a realistic sensation of the pain you are feeling.
You can also use another person’s pain. Tell of their pain from your perspective. Get even more creative if you have to. If you know someone who is fighting cancer, write from the point of view of this dreadful disease. Know a vet in a wheelchair? How does the wheelchair feel having to be his/her legs day after day? Take on pain from all angles. Don’t just limit it to how a human feels.
We certainly cannot avoid pain. It comes in many forms and will smother us several times in our life. So attack it head on and write about the suffering. It may not always be the solution to help you, but it could be the words someone else needs to deal with their pain.
