Writing Tip: Using Images
Pictures can provide us with great inspiration as writers. It is surprising how diverse the responses to one image can be. Yet images are more than simply ways to spark our creativity and our imagination. When relevant and used in the right way, they can also compliment our writing.
Inserting pictures into posts or as headers can draw attention to our writing and give the reader an impression of what they are about to read. They can also highlight a certain feature of our creation that we want people to notice, such as a house or a person, or enhance an emotion that we have written about. However, images should also be used with caution. Too many pictures can break up your piece and may distract from the flow of your writing. If you have produced a small piece of text or a poem, then it is best to have one picture at the beginning or the end of the piece that is particularly relevant to what you have written. This way, you can draw your reader in without removing their attention from the text. A long or descriptive piece of writing would be better suited to pictures between text, as they can break up the writing and give your audience a moment to pause before diving back in.
The important thing is that the images you choose are suited to whatever you have written. They can be anything from photographs to sketches. You don’t have to be an artist to create something that looks good and gives off the right impression. A word of warning: be careful where you get your images from. Photographs found on Google Images can be very tempting, but sticking a copyright notice beneath the picture you have inserted in your post does not mean you have permission to use it. If you haven’t got express permission from the owner, it’s off limits.
