That first breath announced,
with a cacophony of wailing.
In youth,
a pretty girl passes by,
takes his breath away,
albeit for short time.
Suffering twilight years,
out of breath with growing frequency,
distances walked lengthen with age.
The top of the staircase
might as well be Mount Olympus.
Then the last breath,
the death rattle always so unexpected,
in spite of its inevitability.
Breathing defines us as living.
Exercise, sensuality, anxiety quickens breath.
Sleep or spiritual harmony deepens it.
This is our message,
sent out into the world.
We are here, we are here.
