I Sat Thinking
Of all the years that have passed me by
Ghostly, images, memories resurrected:
School day
I tried to run away
Back to my Nanny
My lavender and lace room
Fear of the unknown gripped me
My sister couldn’t catch me
As I ran and ran and ran
Her voice slowly fading
I remember hiding in the basement
Waiting for the sound of my siblings
My packed lunch eaten slowly
Fearful of sound echoing
Being discovered::
Milwaukee, a city of criss cross streets
Schools on every corner
Or so it seemed
Mine, massive, intimidating, yellow bricked
I preferred the “yellow brick road”
My dreams, my fairy tales
In the basement I sat, hour upon hour
The scent of supper drifting
Soon, I’d emerge from my haven
Fill my belly… waiting…waiting
For the teachers call;
I guess they missed me after all.
