Interview – Book: Strange Sounds

Creative Talents Unleashed: Hi Jeff, thank you for agreeing to this interview.

Jeff: You are so welcome! Thank you for having me.

Creative Talents Unleashed: Tell us a little about yourself and your background?

Jeff: I am a father of 7 beautiful children, and married the love of my life. I was born in Baltimore Maryland in 1982.

Creative Talents Unleashed: So when did you fall in love with poetry or writing in general, when did you decide this life was for you? Tell us a bit about that discovery process.

Jeff: As a child I always had constant thoughts running through my head. I was not sure what any of it meant, until the pen touched the paper. From then on out the words never stopped, they still never do. I knew I was different but wasn’t sure where I would fit in. So I never really did fit in..a misfit if you will.

Creative Talents Unleashed: Why do you write, what is it that you’re trying to communicate through your work?

Jeff: I write to inspire, encourage and captivate. I want my work to be felt not just read.

Creative Talents Unleashed: Where does your inspiration come from, what might inspire you at any moment to write a story or poem?

Jeff: Inspiration you say? Wow! It comes from a word, a picture. It comes from anywhere my eyes see. My love life, my children, my past, present and future. Let’s just say my inspirations are limitless. They never stop, and I don’t believe they ever will.

Strange SoundsCreative Talents Unleashed: What was the hardest thing about writing your book?

Jeff: Getting it right, making it perfect, knowing perfection does not exist.

Creative Talents Unleashed: What was the easiest thing about writing your book?

Jeff: Loving what I do, while doing it.

Creative Talents Unleashed: There are many authors who say that in the process of writing a book you learn things about yourself. Did you learn anything in your book writing process about yourself, if so what?

Jeff: I’ve learned my depth is much deeper than I ever thought possible.

Creative Talents Unleashed: What in your view is the role or responsibility of a writer or poet, if there is any?

Jeff: Keep yourself sane, in a world of insanity.

Creative Talents Unleashed: What are your ambitions as a writer, where do you hope to see yourself in say 5 years?

Jeff: In 5 years is unclear at the moment, as each second passes things change. I will always be writing to inspire and intrigue. I can’t see the future, but I have shattered the past. I am confident enough to push so hard, so that one day all of my dreams will come true. One already did, I am a published author.

Creative Talents Unleashed: Who is your favorite writer or poet? Perhaps you have a favorite quote from them that you would like to share.

Jeff: Edgar Alan Poe and Dr. Sues. The Raven, and The Cat In The Hat. I’m Strange I know lol.

Creative Talents Unleashed: What advice would you give to aspiring writers who have dreams of publishing or making writing a career choice?

Jeff: Never give up because someone doesn’t like your work. Write for you first, take all criticism with an open mind. Nothing is easy, but it makes it more bearable when you love what you do.

About the Book…

This is the heartfelt debut by poet, Jeff Oliver. He has created an eclectic composition of prose, with a universal appeal.  His mosaic of words varies from his desire to live his own dreams, not the dreams of others, to a profound love for his soul mate. His heart renders passionate prose and sounds; addressing racial bigotry, an unkind political temperature, social mores, all while expressing tenderness and longing and abiding passion.

Jeff Oliver has experienced various, albeit difficult life lessons, which fermented and grew as a fine wine; into a beautiful cacophony of verse. I predict he will be considered a poet for all seasons; his words have a lovely flow and syntax, pleasing to the mind and soul. There are things hidden within, for the reader to discover and reply, “Yes, I feel that too.”
