Writing Tip: Take Advantage of Prompts
Whether it’s from a writing course, a dedicated prompt blog or a new blog trying to establish itself, writers who are looking for inspiration should search for prompts that capture their attention and get their brain working like mad. If a prompt doesn’t fill you with writing ideas, then there are plenty of others out there that will.
Different types of prompts work better for different writers. If words work better for you, focus on single word prompts. Prompts like ‘right’, ‘love’ and ‘travel’ can be interpreted in so many ways that it is always interesting to discover what people have created from such a simple cue. If sentences get your mind going, then there are blogs out there to suit you, too. If whole paragraphs are your thing, then don’t worry â you’re covered as well. If pictures inspire you the most, then there are dedicated places for you to find prompts and inspiration. Or, pick a mixture and experiment to see what you can create.
When you write for a prompt, you’re combining your creative ideas with information that you might not have thought of on your own. It might not be something that you would usually write about, but in exploring new ways to write and new subjects to write about, you’re challenging yourself and expanding your horizons. If there’s a word count or a specific form to use, then you’re really challenging yourself. Producing something you’re pleased with in answer to a prompt can be incredibly rewarding for a writer.
Furthermore, if you’re interested in being published, find an indie publisher in your genre that posts prompts or writing ideas on social media. By discovering what they’re looking for and filling in their prompts, you can get your writing judged and review yourself on a professional level.
