I love being that poet
Who doesn’t fit in.
Who colors outside the lines
With shades of puzzling innuendos
Who transforms his paper trails
Into outspoken crescendos.
Shamelessly diving
Into foreign
Forbidden territory
With the intention
Of looking for
New ways of self-expression
Alternative leeways
For spiritual exploration
Constantly soul-searching
For inspiration,
From the most minuscule
Forms of life.
I love being that poet
Who is frequently misunderstood.
Deliberately obscure
Yet spontaneously self-assured.
Starting off his performances
Feeling a little bit uptight;
But then all of a sudden
All my worries seem to subside
As I put the mic aside
So then I can make proper use
Of the entire theatrical space
Where I am able to unfold my creative grace
Among the rowdy crowd
As I skip and loop around,
As I throw myself onto the ground.
Breaking down
Infectious expectations
That don’t align with the abnormalities
Of my Peruvian personality.
I love being that poet,
Whose monologues are mostly conveyed
Through self-healing incantations
Through fleshy gesticulations,
Attempting to bring peaceful awareness
By getting rid of all your mental tribulations.
Using my mouth
As artillery
And my words
As an auxiliary
For the misinterpreted,
Misrepresented minority.
And even though I might not
Fit in with the vast majority,
I am still going to keep on projecting
The most genuine expression of myself.
Because if there is something I have learned
Through embellishing approbations
And multiple bitter rejections
Is that at the end of the day,
Being yourself
Is the most powerful thing
We can possibly ever do.
