Poetry Form: Etheree

Similar to the Cinquain and the Rictameter, the Etheree is a ten line structure ascending in syllable count for ten unrhymed lines. It’s attributed to an American poet, Etheree Taylor Armstrong of Arkansas. An Etheree should focus on one idea or subject. Line one is one syllable, line two is two syllables, line three is three syllables, line four is four syllables, line five is five syllables, line six is six syllables, line seven is seven syllables, line eight is eight syllables, line nine is nine syllables, and line ten is ten syllables.

Example:

She Even Cries Pretty

She cries pretty in her humility

From a deep space in her modesty

She’s beautiful yet does not know

Her tears are diamonds that flow

Out of unknown triumphs

Jewel in the crown

Pain muffled sounds

Not unheard

Cries are

Her

She

Will learn

Her beauty

Inside her power

Embracing herself

Loving every inch of she

Contentment in her brown skin

Confident in knowing herself

Holding herself in the highest esteem

Accepting the lineage of her strength

Look at your reflection love thine self whole

Close your eyes butterfly and soar high

Open your wings don’t be afraid

Believe in yourself fully

Gracefully as you are

This is your image

God has designed

Behold what

See you

I
