Writing Tip: Spring Inspiration

In Florida, the tabebuia trees are starting to blossom, which means spring is officially here. Spring symbolizes change and rebirth, and is a fantastic time for writers to be inspired. It is a time where the landscape comes alive, where we adjust to changes in time, where believers celebrate a resurrection, and the Irish celebrate their heritage. Many will scramble to get their taxes done, while others will be planning vacations for Spring break. There is so much we can write about during this season. Here are a few ways to get you started:

Say Goodbye – Many use this time to write about new beginnings, so why not do the opposite and write about the things you want to say goodbye to. Spring clean that lifestyle and write about why you want to leave it behind. Write about those toxic people you want to put in your past.
Use the Senses – As the weather gets warmer and the smells of spring flowers fill the air, use those senses to describe how the changes of the season is affecting you. Describe the misery of suffering from allergies or the improvements to the texture of your skin. Can you hear more birds singing in the morning, or is there less traffic as those seasonal travelers return to their homes? Explore the foods of Spring and describe their tastes, whether good or bad.
Spring Showers – Spring is the season for rain, so use this element of weather to write metaphorically. Many may see a rain shower or thunderstorm to be an inconvenience, so take this time to write about what it symbolizes to you. Rain could be a blessing to some. Storms could represent a transition of our strength to others.
Be Visual – Many of us wonder what Spring looks like in different parts of the world or in another state. Give visual descriptions of Spring where you live or places you have visited. Take your reader to that place as best as you can. In a field of flowers, how does one differ from the other? Do the mountains surrounding you adapt to the changes or do they remain covered in snow? Tell your reader what a night scene may look like in Spring.
