Sometimes, you are not in the right mindset to write anything productive. It does not matter whether you want to write a haiku or a full length novel: you are not always in a mood that will allow you to produce something you can feel positive about.
This does not have to be a problem. I often find that I am at my most creative at times when I am unable to sit down and write, such as at work or at a friend’s house, and I suspect this is because in those moments I am not actively trying to create. That is the right time and the right place for me. Regardless of how frustrating it can be, in those moments I am in the correct mindset. You have to discover what your writing mindset is and when you are at your most creative.
There are many things that you can do to get into the writing ‘mood’. Activities such as timed writing for five or ten minutes (no need to stop to think about what you are writing, just get on with it!) can whip up lots of ideas that were previously lost somewhere in the back of your brain. Reading or taking a walk can inspire you in ways that sitting at a desk facing a blank sheet of paper cannot. They can also give you a much needed break from writing.
Ideas do not always flow freely when you are putting pressure on yourself to create something. When you write and how you feel when you begin to write can make a huge difference on the result.
