Writing Tip: Writing Ideas

There is nothing worse for a writer than having absolutely nothing to write about. In order to avoid this, you should have a variety of writing ideas available to you at all times. These should be a range of things that you have previously envisioned but never expanded upon that you can delve into at the right moment. They can vary from genres to topics to characters and more.

A good way to ensure that you have plenty of ideas at your fingertips is to keep a writing notebook or journal. This can be used to jot down any writing ideas you have whenever they come to you, whether they are complicated plots or single word prompts that you can come back to later. Single sentences or lines of poetry are a great way to inspire you when you feel stuck, so write them down for use on a day when you struggle!

If you find it hard to generate writing ideas, there are many things you can do to get the inspiration flowing. Your idea does not have to be the most ingenious, inventive one in the world, nor does it have to be wholly unique (and let’s face it, that would be a challenge). Reading is an easy source of ideas, as is looking for writing prompts.

You could also time yourself, taking five or ten minutes to write anything that comes to mind, then pick out the good ideas. You could brainstorm ideas on a piece of paper or post it notes (which allow you to move them around and connect them in more way that just a single sheet of paper). You could take ideas from movies or songs or posters you walk past on your day to work or school.

However you come up with your ideas, your notebook will be invaluable on those days when you feel uninspired: there will already be a list of ideas written down for you. All you will have to do is connect the dots.

  1. Laura, Raja, Good points!

My book to be published came out of journal writing which was inspired by nature, culture, food, beauty, pain, relationships, values, other books, and every day moments.

Being awake to, and recording, what takes place within and around, even in few words, can be expanded to full essays and poems, fiction or non fiction.

    Blessed day, ladies!
