Writing Tip: Set Realistic Targets

Writing Tip: Set Realistic Targets

We all want to write as much as we possibly can and as professionally as we can, but unfortunately other things in our lives can get in the way. Work, school, homework, cleaning, cooking … there’s an endless list of things that you may feel prevent you from sitting down and writing as often as you might like. It can be frustrating when you can’t find enough time to pursue your creative desires.

A great way to feel accomplished despite the limited time you have is to set yourself good targets. For instance, if you’re working Monday to Friday from 9 to 5, it is unlikely that you’ll be able to write 5,000 words of your novel every day. You won’t create 20 poems a week, either. Make realistic targets for yourself, such as:

• 2 or 3 blog posts per week.
• 500 words a day.
• 30 minutes of focused writing a day.
• Writing in response to 1 or 2 prompts per week.

By setting yourself small goals, you will not push yourself to write more than you are able, and you will be able to focus on the standard of your writing more than simply producing something. When you meet (or even beat) these targets, you will enjoy a sense of accomplishment with your writing.
