Excerpt from “Pressing On” by Author Billy Charles Root
Puppets
The puppet master tilts his hand
The strings he tug’s and pull’s
Forced to dance and strike a pose
he jerks us around like fools
Held by strings we twirl and spin
We get put up and dragged out again
Put on a show for other puppets to see
We cry to each other to be set free
Dance and spin, twirl and pose
We bow at the close of all our shows
The string less dancer quietly appears
Performing away stringed puppet fears
He dances for another with the string of hearts
They move together and never apart
Spinning by us he cuts the strings
We fall down on liberties sting
Finally stand on our own two feet
We dance with him to glory’s beat
Sometimes we fall and sometimes we soar
Sometimes the puppet master knocks on our door
Sometimes we cry cause we still get hurt
Sometimes were left with nothing but our shirt
Some of us retie ourselves to the puppet masters strings
Some of us finally learn to let go of all things
Let us stand with the string less one
And dance to his song
Till he takes us home to where we belong.
