Invite Stories: Character Development

Writer’s Challenge: Character Development
(Six of six characters)

Note: You will be given six characters from the same story line that you create. The directions are the same for each character you are given. Build your character. After the completion of character six you will be ready to plot out your story. Have fun with it, and remember this is just for fun, but could take on a story of its own.

Use the following steps to develop this character:

1. Define the setting, or initial scene.
2. Define your needs as the journalist seeks information: Where, who, what, when, why, how.
3. Think creatively
4. Start with an archetype/pattern
5. Add specific characteristics
6. Define your character’s purpose or goal
7. Give them attitude
8. Give your character quirks
9. Give your character a home
10. Work out their fears, weaknesses, motivations and biggest secrets

Tip: The type of character you create determines how the story will flow. If the main characters are closely aligned with their setting, the flow will begin shallowly, and the character will tend to blend in with their surroundings and the other characters around them. If they’re diametrically opposed, dramatic conflict will unfold from the very beginning, and you will work it out from there.
