Tracing Faces by Brenda-Lee Ranta

Distance has brought

fragmented families

fragmented friendships

memories in photographs

tracing faces with fingertips

silent prayers said for them

as eyes close for another night,

in the dark, we wonder

where our years have gone

what time has eaten

and digested

Death has wrought

silent ruminations,

silent repentance,

never spoken out loud

memories in photographs

tracing faces with fingertips

silent conversations with

them in the dark, wondering

if they hear us, if they

remember us, as we

remember

Loneliness has brought

women to bars

and men to bars

their inner desperation

tracing faces with fingertips

silent longing for connection,

for love, for understanding

hoping against all hope that

this could last beyond a night

leaving empty hearts as they

grow weary of memories..
