Writing Tip: Holiday Images

Christmas Day has come and gone. You probably ate too much. Some of us might be happy the family gatherings are over. Others canât wait to attack all the sales in stores. Use events this week to reflect on some of the things you may have seen to prompt some writing. Take those visual memories or encounters still to come, and write some descriptive poetry. Here are a few ways to get you motivated:

Ugly Sweaters â whether you created it yourself, saw someone wearing one, or found it hanging on a rack at a store, let those ugly Christmas sweaters inspire you to write a funny poem. Write it from the sweaters perspective and make it interesting.

Christmas Tree Themes â Some families may have more than one tree and stick to a specific theme. Some people go all out with: upside down trees, a favorite sport team, or all things Disney. Write about those unique ornaments or styles of trees you have seen.

The Dinner Table â Did you see some unusual table centerpieces? Were there certain foods that looked too pretty to eat, or maybe some were a bit too strange? What color themes where used for the dinnerware? Give your reader a vivid description of the dinner table during the holidays.

Gifts â Some people can get very creative with the gift wrapping. Some may just wrap in newspaper or throw into a paper bag. What are some thoughtful presents you received? Write about what transpired during the process of unwrapping those Christmas gifts.

The Leftovers â You canât wait to join the chaos of the after-sales. You look for great deals for yourself, maybe collect a few gifts for next year, or even buy some decoration additions to use for next Christmas. In your shopping adventures, write about the hustle and bustle in the stores and some of the items you encounter as you rummage through the sales.
