On Shifting Sands
We gathered our hopes, our dreams
Watched them form
In shapes, sizes beyond our imagination
Success was our doorway,
Our entrance speaking volumes
Ornate, opulent – we had arrived!
Many of us breaking the glass ceiling
Hard at work, determination, ambition driving us,
Satisfaction wears a thousand faces
Behind the ladder of success;
A fragile existence
When the storms arrive…
Our castles in the sand
Crumbled, washed away
As the economy crashed
So did we
As wave after wave
Flat-lined our futures
We will live to learn
“Nothing is to be taken for granted”
The thin line of success and poverty
Tighter than ever
No longer building our castles,
We simply survive,
One timid day at a time;
Economy was a wave crashing
Ever lashing at what was,
Teaching us, what really matters…
To live within our means.
