Writing Tip: Continuity

One of the most important things to focus on in a series of poems or chapters of a story is continuity. This means you need to think about how your first part flows into your second part, your second into your third, and so on. You could have an overarching theme or a regular time scale in order to maintain continuity.
Let’s look at a few examples of how you can ensure continuity in your writing.

1. Time. Time is very important when you are writing something based on actions or events. Each section of your series could take place every day, week, month, year, ten years and so on. If your work is based around age, the seasons or a period in history then time can help you to maintain continuity.

2. Recurring characters. Regular characters allow you to build upon their personalities and can involve the audience emotionally with their struggle. Anything based on emotional or physical change could use recurring characters to keep continuity.

3. Recurring phrases. This is a clever way to link your sections together without using an especially strong connection. Similarly, recurring sentence or line structure (such as similar sentences at the beginning or end of each piece) can create a bond of continuity. These could be used in a series without any overarching character or themes, or within a series that you are writing without a strict plan.

4. Overarching theme. This does not have to be a strict theme. You could use something very focused such as a particular event, or something very flexible such as a concept. An overarching theme is a great way to link a series of poems together in one collection.

These are by no means the only ways that you can ensure continuity in your writing, of course. You will find your own ways to link to sections of your series together, but these are all good ways to maintain the flow within distinct pieces.
