Writing Tip: Freestyle
Ever had one of those moments where you just had so much to say – so many emotions stirring inside you that you just wanted to scream or take it out on someone? Then write it!! Sometimes the best poems are written because of the emotions we keep inside and we can learn to channel that energy. Put those words on paper using a freestyle strategy of writing – by letting words flow without worrying about spelling, grammar or punctuation.
Freestyle writing is a very liberating experience. Some find it as a form of therapy, like writing in a journal containing your deepest, darkest secrets. I’ve seen writing prompts that encourage freestyle using pictures and giving writers the choice to describe what they see, how it makes them feel or tell a story from the photo. You can even just let your pen loose by observing a waiting room at a doctor’s office or watching the interactions while your kids play at the park. Or it could be as simple as taking a blank page and just writing random thoughts until they run out.
It may turn out to be a bunch of gibberish, but go back to it after a few days and it could transform into something beautiful. You may be able to pick out a few decent lines and turn it into prose. Maybe get inspired to attempt blackout poetry using markers or paint. Perhaps a soliloquy or lines of a movie script can blossom from free-styling.
Think of freestyle as a writing exercise and once you get the hang of it, then you can choose any topic to write about with ease.
