A Sketch Of The Eye

How do you describe a pair of beautiful eyes
At first thought everything has already been said
With clichés using every string of descriptive words imaginable

When you really look at hers new thoughts rise up
Those eyes are artful, extraordinary and thrilling
Created from a masters pallet of shades of browns and reds

Finer than the ultimate grades of mahogany or cocobolo
Textured and more complicated than burled walnut
Get a little closer, they begin to sparkle more than fine gems

They pull you in beckoning instant attention
Step nearer where her breath is on your face
Not trying to focus on both, but on one then the other
So inviting and striking yet still very divergent
A sunburst of color igniting the iris flooded by echoes of light

At first glance, unthinking, a pair of eyes seem identical
Not so, each is as diverse as the fingerprints of an entire culture
