Stunted Growth

Neglected and discarded like yesterday’s garbage
Witness to domestic conflicts and profane verbiage
A small wonder lost in an expansive world
In need of guidance; just ready to swirl
Out of control while being confined
Dumpster as my bed and boxes as my pillow is all I can find
Appetite for destruction and infatuated with the streets
Laying low for survival while law enforcement do their daily sweeps
Anger and an occasional sneer is my costume to mask the pain
Readying for redemption; yearning to be home again
Grown up now both physically and mentally
A recent graduate from Adversity University
Preparing for the future making it quite clearer
Gazing through the windshield and not the rear-view mirror.

Chester the great horned owl
Could not seem to land on his branch
Flight after flight he tried
But his wings kept flapping
And right on by he’d fly

Tired of always being in flight
He knew he must succumb . . .
To this silly old fear
And simply put down
His landing gear

But night after night
The story did repeat
Chester was so tired
He was feeling quite beat

With his eyes low
And his wings so tired
He spotted two little field mice
As white as snow

And in one gentle scoop he picked them up
Feeling he might be just in luck
He told them both he refused to eat them
If they would simply agree to help him
It’s a win, win, with out a doubt
They keep their life for helping him out.

He dropped them in the tree
Where they perched themselves up
On his branch they held on tight
A flag in hand
And the target too
Two little mice with a job to do

And in one powerful thrusting flight
Chester Launched forward with all his might
Two little mice
Holding on for dear life . . .

Looking determination in the eyes, having never felt fear for their lives.
