Time to Pay the Piper
I stood helpless
As he threatened her
Daring only to look
At their silhouettes
In practiced pose
On the concrete
The picture no less frightening
Praying for lightening
To strike him dead
She’d said he would be fine
Depending on his mood
She would get her fix
Playing tricks with men
Again, for the price
Of a packet of forget
No escaping the net
She owed him
He owned her
She needed him
He fed her need
It started with weed
Then pills, the thrills not enough,
onto puff
And then the brown stuff
Trapped in the twilight
Seldom a night
Without tripping
Skipping life for her habit
A rabbit in the headlights
When clean, a vacant shell
When “high”,
Supply and demand
He always had the upper hand
Now he wants his cash
A little ash was cool
But he’s nobody’s fool
Time to pay the piper
