Writing Tip: Leave Your Most Powerful Image For Last

Whether you are writing poetry or a story, you are inevitably going to be building up to something – a grand finale. Whether that is some catastrophic events that causes mass devastation or the recognition of the beauty of something completely ordinary and every day, your ending is key to your readers understanding. It summarizes everything you have written, whether you round it off nicely or finish with a cliff-hanger.

Your readers are more likely to remember a strong piece of writing with an emotive or powerful ending than something that seems to fade away. Mastering how to end your piece is as important as discovering the best way to begin it: the end should have an impact or make a statement that resonates in your readers’ minds.

There is no need to have an answer for everything you have written about. You can leave your writing as open to interpretation as you wish. Instead of trying everything in a neat knot, focus on finishing your piece with an image that will remain with your readers for the rest of the day. Every paragraph, chapter, verse or line is a step towards your ending. Build up the imagery that you use as you write, and end with the most powerful image you can.
