Writing Tip: Poetry: How Long is a Line?

You pick up your pen
And begin
To write with ingenious intention
To create a poem
Of wit
Or of rhyme
Or of passion –
But hold on
Something is terribly wrong!
Where should you put
Your line breaks?

And where should you
Start
Or end
A new verse?
Ah, fret not!

Unless limited
To a form such as haiku
There’s no need to fear

As you write, think
What do I wish to
Emphasise
In this poetic enterprise?
How should my poem sound
When
A stranger reads it out loud?
And when a line becomes too long
Think
How can I divide this line up into smaller, individual lines in order to keep the flow of my poem both natural and enticing?
The answer is entirely
Up to you

So read, explore,
Create!
And I hope you found this silly tip
More useful
Than a paragraph telling you
To think carefully about
The structure
Of your poetry.
