Excerpt from “Pressing On” by Author Billy Charles Root
Gifted
Too often we lie down thinking
As if tomorrow is still coming
I kiss my wife on the shoulder
Tell her good night
Close my eyes drifting into the black
Of course it’s coming
I mean I have plans
Things to do
Life to live
When really
Our lives are not truly belong to us
They can be taken at any time
Without our permission
We live life as if life is ours to keep
Isn’t it really theirs?
The people around us
That surround us
Life is a gift
Gifts are to be given
Unwrapped and enjoyed
And always possess the possibility of wearing out getting lost or being stolen
Therefore
I believe
We are required to give ourselves away
Our lives belong to those around us
And theirs belong to us
Let us not die with our love intact
Let us die empty
Empty of the love
Actions
Words
Works
Smiles
Hands held
Hugs shared
And Time
