Writing Tip: A Story’s Most Important Bones
Writers of creative non-fiction (or most writing, for that matter) create powerful work when they understand and pay attention to the primary narrative thread of the story they are telling. Too often we get lost without even knowing why; we only know that the end result isnât satisfying. But usually there is a simple reasonâperhaps we let a quirky secondary character take over or indulged ourselves with a charming aside or delved too deeply into family backstory. Moments such as these can certainly help give a piece of writing spark and individuality, but they warrant inclusion only when they serve your principal narrative. Make sure you know what the spine of your story is, get it right, and then worry about the fingers and toes.
