Writer Highlight Featuring Andrew Neil Carpenter: Mine alone is the grey box
its walls; I was put in here, alone, so they might take away the light. Every hour I hear screams outside, and water running beneath my feet. Every other hour a hatch above me opens and in its brief flash of light another part of my soul is taken.
I have not been told of my crime, but still I wave each time my interlocutors come to purge me, hoping redemption might still be mine.
But it won’t, for the grey box, and its wardens outwith, are not the type to forgive. This I know to be true, for I am the one who built them.
